Guiding Principles & Values
WE - ONE MIND FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE WORK

Many of the struggles of Indigenous Peoples are from severe historical trauma, ambiguous loss, and environmental disruption. Whiteswan Environmental practices Indigenous Public Health by addressing the root causes of trauma through connections, collaborations, and honoring the diversity of the First Peoples of the Americas and the Indigenous Peoples of the earth who have a long history of their worldviews and connection with the natural environment being oppressed and dismantled.

As an Indigenous-led organization, WE are working for needed change by building equitable and collaborative networks that dismantle systems of oppression by implementing the following practices:

  • Seeking guidance from our elder traditionalists for support and intergenerational connections
  • Ensuring Indigenous voices are included in decisions affecting Indigenous peoples through the Spirit of the Sxwo’le Coalition;
  • Equitably employing traditional providers and Indigenous peoples to lead, direct ,and staff programs;
  • Move toward knowledge democracy and move beyond epistemicide (genocide of knowledge) to restore our heritage with a living culture and knowledge systems;
  • Creating curriculum to share Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with common schools;
  • Ensure that Indigenous history, culture, law, sovereignty, and psychospiritual orientations are  included in educational programming, community and regional planning sessions, and project development;
  • Preserve Straits Salish dialects through language immersion and  exposure;

  • Access and build transboundary relationships to our sovereign territory and resources to better understand who we are and where we come from, and practice our inherent aboriginal birthrights;
  • Prevent epistemicide and support knowledge democracy by instilling and implementing TEK systems and natural laws as we re-cultivate our homelands using the 13 Moons calendar to develop Indigenous and Western curricula for our field-to-classroom programming;
  • Promote respect for multicultural integrational programming, with awareness of the need for community healing and building trust;
  • Create value by being open to ways in which systems of oppression are perpetuated, and by keeping our basic strengths at our core.
